Sustainability /
Soracom is fundamentally committed to contributing to the preservation of the global environment and the realization of a sustainable society through our IoT platform. We believe that IoT plays a significant role in helping businesses improve operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and promote workstyle innovation. To achieve these goals, we take a multifaceted approach.
IoT technology enables real-time monitoring of the operational status of equipment and devices, helping businesses reduce unnecessary energy consumption and minimize waste of resources. For example, early detection of equipment anomalies allows for optimized maintenance, while streamlining production line operations can lead to reduced energy use.
In addition, remote monitoring and control using IoT connectivity helps reduce the need for on-site visits, thereby contributing to lower CO₂ emissions. This not only cuts transportation costs but also reduces the burden on employees and enhances overall productivity.
Soracom places great importance on ensuring that its service infrastructure is environmentally responsible.
Soracom delivers its services by actively utilizing cloud platforms that promote the use of renewable energy, such as AWS, which has committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2025.
By adopting advanced technologies and optimizing data processing, Soracom operates large-scale transactional data infrastructure in a manner that reduces both energy consumption and operational costs, thereby minimizing the power usage of its servers.
Soracom is also actively engaged in reducing the environmental impact of SIM cards and related technologies.
Since February 2022, Soracom has offered “EcoSIM” for its domestic "planX3" in Japan. These SIMs are approximately one-quarter the size of a standard credit card and are made from 100% recyclable ABS plastic. The packaging reduces plastic use by 75%, resulting in a reduction of approximately 4 tons of plastic per one million SIM cards.
The smaller size also improves transportation efficiency, contributing to over 2 tons of greenhouse gas emissions reduction per one million SIMs.
On October 30, 2024, Soracom commercially launched “iSIM,” a next-generation SIM technology that follows traditional card-type SIMs and eSIMs. iSIM integrates SIM functionality directly into a communication module as a single chip, enabling IoT devices to become smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient. This contributes to environmental impact reduction through streamlined component procurement, logistics, and storage.
Soracom contributes to the realization of a sustainable society by supporting businesses that are working to solve social and environmental challenges. We believe that leveraging data and improving efficiency through IoT can drive the development of a circular economy and help create a better future.
Recognizing our role as a company committed to sustainability, we focus on strengthening governance in ways that align with the nature and stage of our business, while aiming for sustainable growth together with society.Soracom continues to provide a strong and reliable platform that enables diverse organizations to adopt IoT, helping them reduce environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency.
